*sniff* i miss the olympics already. i miss looking forward to having something to watch when i go home. and it's especially tough right now since my mom's with me; it's nice having something that we both can watch to pass the time in peace. i don't know what we can do now, and i am starting to dread going home and facing the prospect of having her preach the gospel to me. this upcoming weekend is labor day weekend, and i'm not sure what i'm going to do with her on my free monday. she wants to go visit stanford campus, which i'll happily take her to, but that will only occupy a few hours. there is a church conference during the weekend, but unfortunately she missed the registration deadline.
i did some good work today. i thought about having to support the background color feature in my block, and i realized i had to make a code change to make it work. after dealing with a core dump during run time, which was very mysterious, i finally figured it out, and now the test seems to be running fine. yay for me!
arby's has a serious gluttonous feast: their 5 item combo for $5.95. i went there with D and I today, and they both got it. and both of them felt sick afterwards. i spent more than them but got less food; i got a beef 'n cheddar, small curly fries, and 4 mozzarella sticks. i love arby's. i might go there again tonight.
oh, speaking of the olympics, here is a great 3-part photo gallery from the games. in part 3, there is a shot of a nipple slip of a water polo player. hehe. it's not sexy or anything, but just interesting. some of the photos are quite spectacular, others pretty humorous.
ok, what do you call your mom's cousin? another cousin? an aunt?
yesterday, we went to dim sum early (at 11am) because i had to pick up my mom from church afterwards. usually, we go at 11:30, but getting there half an hour early made a big difference. the front room of dynasty was only half-full, and the six of us were able to secure a table in there instead of being sent to the back room. that meant that we got access to all the good dishes before they ran out, including fresh-out-of-the-kitchen leek dumplings, which were high on my priority list. yum. if people can get up that early, i think we should starting going early from now on.
to my mean commenter: where did you meet me? you know, i think it's pretty lame and cowardly to criticize me without leaving a name or contact info. very cheap. that's all i have to say on the matter.
i called alan like five times this weekend, and he never picked up. he finally called me late last night, and it turned out he and ting were celebrating their wedding anniversary in bodega bay. ah, bodega bay. the only time i went there was the week after freshman year ended. a couple of us from our freshman dorm went up there after school was over and spent a few days in a house owned by a friend's parents. the house had a huge shower, and my gf and i got to shower together. i think it was our first time. fun fun! it was also the first time i used a bidet. it tickled my asshole.
one day at bodega bay, we went to the beach, and i got the sudden urge to scale a cliff. i kept climbing and climbing, and about 20 feet from the top, the slope became vertical. and all of a sudden, the rocks broke, and i slid down for a few feet. it was fucking scary. i could have fallen off to my death, i'm sure, and i basically froze and panicked. finally, i gathered my wits and slowly climbed down, and i was really shaken. it was one of the few times in my life i could have gotten seriously hurt, if not killed.
my mom has a serious gas issue. there is something wrong with her GI system, and it causes her to have a lot of gas in her system. as a result, she burps a lot. it's loud, and it's frequent. i'm sort of afraid to take her out because people will think it's rude when she burps. she told me that she has to burp in church as well, and she feels embarrassed when it happens. ugh.
ok, time to check up on a test and then go home.
this weekend, i managed to take care of my mom as well as spend time with my friends.
friday night, my mom was at church, so i got to have fun at jenS's birthday celebration. we started with over a dozen people at banana leaf for dinner at 6:30. i don't really understand why that place is so popular, and i'm not a big fan of malaysian food. the only dishes that i enjoyed were the roti prata and the beef rendang. when we left, which was pretty late (for dinner time, anyway), there was a ton of people still waiting outside for a table.
then, we went to frozo's in milpitas for frozen yogurt. there was a yelp event, so the place was packed. the froyo was pretty bad compared to the other places i've tried, but at least there was mochi.
and then, it was off to saddlerack, this big country western bar. it was quite happening, though, filled with a bunch of white people; i think we were the only asians there. i started jen off with a lemon drop (her request), and then a midori sour. and that was it from me, because i know that three drinks is pretty much her limit. i had two black labels on the rocks. jessica was there, and i'm training up her tolerance, so i didn't go easy on her and got her a long island iced tea.
then, one of jen's friends got her an amaretto sour, and eddie, the worst instigator of all, tipped jen's scale with a buttery nipple shot. jen danced a bit, and even got on stage for the "i got friends in low places" song. and then, after a while, it all hit jen hard. she went into the bathroom and puked.
i'll get back to jen later, but i wanted to describe saddlerack. there was a mechanical bull, of course, but it was broken, so jen couldn't ride it. phooey. there was a big dance floor for line dancing and stuff. and the best part was the upside down margarita chair. this is where they make you lie back, and they pour the tequila and margarita mix directly into your mouth for as long as you can take it. all for $7! that's pretty cheap, assuming you can handle your liquor.
anyways, after jen yacked, they kicked her out nicely, saying something like, "maybe you should go out and get some fresh air." we guys didn't know that happened, so we just sat there for like 20 minutes wondering what the hell was going on. finally, john and i took the purple hooter shots that grace got jen (there was no way in hell that she was going to take them) and went outside. and then we went home. ivy took jen home, and jimmy and sabrina drove there too to make sure she was tucked in nicely. i called jen the next day to check up on her.
saturday, i took my mom to maruichi for some ramen, and then, jenC and i drove to tartini and met up with jack for some frozen yogurt. we talked for a bit on the bench outside before jack had to leave to pick up his kids from the circus.
then, i went home, watched some olympics, and then i took my mom for her first mongolian bbq experience. i made her put in some chili paste to get some taste.
then, i went over to paul's place, where i asked him one final time if he was sure he wanted me to come. he said yes, so i booked my tickets. weird thing was, i told my mastercard company that i was going to buy some tickets in european currency, and they approved it, but my credit card wouldn't go through. (i was buying a BMI airline ticket.) then, i gave up, and for kicks, i used my $55,000 credit limit AMEX card. and that one went through. so, it's final! i'm going to the UK! however, i didn't get my internal UK flights because leeya was going to change the itinerary, and she was sleeping. so i guess i'm going to have to wait on that. then, paul and mikeC started playing LAN games, so i went home.
then, i watched the gold medal team USA basketball game. HOLY SHIT. that was a close game. spain was only down 2 points with 8 minutes to go before kobe went nuts, and then, they pulled to within 4 points with 3 minutes to go. i was shitting bricks, and peter was texting me like nuts. i was seriously nervous. but in the end, we pulled it off, and i was so happy. i called my dad in taiwan, and he told me he was following it, too. so i went to bed smiling, and i even dreamed about the game.
sunday, i woke up at 9am groggy (my tv was on until 6am), and i took my mom to church. then, i had dim sum with grace and company at 11am. afterwards, i went home, fell asleep, and then picked up my mom from church. i came back and promptly passed out until 4:30.
i called up will, and we went to go see _tropic thunder_. will had already seen it, but he wanted to see it again. i thought the movie was enjoyable, but i had no idea that the movie producer buy was played by tom cruise. it looked nothing like him! i really liked robert downey, jr.
i had dinner with my mom (she made some noodles that were given to her from a church friend), and then we watched the olympic closing ceremony. i thought most of it was lame, especially the "beijing, beijing, i love beijing" song. and i was still tired from the previous night, so i just went to bed.
*sniff* the olympics are now over. i really enjoyed it a lot. and now what the hell am i going to do at night, especially with my mom?
